Darren Verderber Obituary, Death – was an only child who passed away in 1938 and was born to Joe and Dorothy Verderber. He received a National Merit Scholarship in 1956 and went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was one of the first recipients. Joe had three children with the late Anita (née Barto), Joe Jr. (Linda), Joe Dellorto (Dr. Lisa Verderber), and Paul (Mary Ann). Joe received the Karl Taylor Compton Prize, MIT’s top undergraduate distinction, for his commitment to supporting his fellow students. His graduate work was financed by a scholarship from the National Science Foundation. Joe spent approximately 30 years working for the Addressograph-Multigraph Corporation (now AM International). His responsibilities expanded from R&D to general management. He held a number of patents and was recognized as AM’s Inventor of the Year in 1980. Before it was sold, he presided over AM’s Varityper Division.

He headed the Laser Systems Division at General Scanning, Inc., where he worked for the final ten years of his working life. After retiring, he served on the audit committee of the board of directors of the Canadian public business Virtek Vision International. Joe, who now admits it, was a nerd in high school. He was an orator, debater, and journalist. He started playing sports at MIT and became a renowned saber fencer. Over the years, he developed into a skier who earned NASTAR medals, a tennis player who competed at the inter-club level in both tennis and platform tennis, and a runner who, among other things, ran the 99th Boston Marathon. He took up golf later in life and characterized himself as more enthusiastic than skilled.

Joe enjoyed imparting knowledge, and he frequently visited Silicon Valley to give “financial boot camps” for workers in the semiconductor equipment sector. For more than 10 years, he also presided over the trustees for his homeowners’ association. He designed and updated their accounting spreadsheets, which were used to calculate reserves and budgets. Additionally, Joe was a committed volunteer in his parishes, most recently serving as a lector and a Eucharistic minister.
