Fred was born on December 9, 1936, to Harry Wilbert “Bake” and Loretta Marian (Smick) Baker and raised in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania with his sister, Nancy Anne (Baker) Weiland. He graduated in 1959 from Roanoke College and the University of Maryland (College Park, MD). After six years in the Maryland National Guard, he earned an Advanced Professional Certificate and Master’s Degree in Education from Western Maryland College in 1970 and 1973, respectively. Fred married Doris Marie Boyer on June 4, 1960, and they lived in Mount Airy, Maryland, with their two children, Scott and Molly, while Fred worked 37 years in Carroll County Public Schools’ physical education department. He coached varsity basketball at Mount Airy and South Carroll High Schools and was the Athletic Director and Physical Education Department Head. He also coached Mount Airy High School baseball and soccer. Fred was well-known for his accomplishments, professionalism, and success until he retired in 1997. The Carroll County Sports Hall of Fame, Maryland State Athletic Directors Hall of Fame, and South Carroll High School Hall of Fame elected him. Fred and his wife, Doris, were members of the University of Maryland Terrapin Club and Rebounders, supporting the men’s and women’s basketball teams at home and abroad. They also cheered on the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens. Fred enjoyed traveling with friends and family to Europe, Australia, and Asia to support Maryland Basketball and Football or for vacations. Spending days on the beach in Ocean City, Maryland, or travelling abroad, he adored the ocean. Fred loved spending time with family and friends and talking to everyone! He was proud of his home and his meticulously maintained lawns. He was most proud of his family, especially his children and grandchildren, who loved their “Popaw.” Fred is survived by his wife of 63 years, daughter, Molly Baker Cooper and her husband, Jonathan of Mount Airy; son, Scott Baker and his wife, Allison of Towson; grandchildren, Scott Baker, Jr., Ben Cooper, Lilly Cooper, Luke Baker, and Emma Baker; and a cousin and nephews. The family will welcome friends from 1:00-4:00pm on Sunday, April 16 and hold memorial services at 11:00am on Monday, April 17 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy, MD.
