George Casey  Obituary, Death Cause – Major General George William Casey Sr. served in the US Army from 1922 until his death in a helicopter crash in South Vietnam in 1970. On March 9, 1922, he was born, and on July 7, 1970, he died. General Casey was leading the 1st Cavalry Division of the United States at the time of his demise. He had been a Korean War veteran before that. George W. Casey Jr., his son, was the 36th Chief of Staff of the United States Army, serving in that capacity from April 2007 until April 2011.

Casey was born into an Irish-American household on March 9, 1922, in the Massachusettsn city of Boston. He transferred to the United States Military Academy at West Point after spending a year there and received his Bachelor of Science degree there in 1945. He received his diploma a year sooner than his peers due to World War II. He earned a Master of Arts in international affairs from Georgetown University in 1958, and a Master of Business Administration from George Washington University in 1965.

He pursued further education at the Center for International Affairs at Harvard University after finishing his undergraduate studies, where he attained his master’s degree. Casey completed the Infantry School Basic Course in November 1945, and the following month, he was deployed to Japan.

He served with the Far East Command’s 188th Parachute Infantry Regiment between the months of January 1946 and November 1948. He served in the 17th Airborne Division from December 1948 to May 1949, stationed at Camp Pickett in Virginia. After that, Casey enlisted in the 187th Airborne Infantry Regiment before serving at Camp Campbell, Kentucky, from June 1949 to November 1951 with the 11th Airborne Division. After the war, he worked as General Lyman L. Lemnitzer’s aide-de-camp, which was one of his responsibilities.
