He will be greatly missed. In his memory, we are sharing an interview with him from the January issue of Archis magazine in 2001, in which Ed Taverne and Pieter Uytenhoven spoke with him about his role as project director for the soon-to-be-built Cité de l’architecture in Paris, the national architectural center of France. In the interview, he argues for an institute and architecture that can attract not only specialists but also the general public; this is something that the field of study struggles with even more than it did in 2001. Dear Jean-Louis, we pray that you rest in peace. Yesterday, August 7, the distinguished architect, critic, and curator Jean-Louis Cohen passed away at the age of 74. Since 1994, he has been the holder of the Sheldon H. Solow Chair of Architectural History at New York University. He is widely regarded for the substantial research he has conducted in the fields of modern architecture and urban planning. Cohen acted in the capacity of curator for a number of illustrious shows, some of which were hosted at the Museum of Modern Art, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine, and the MAXXI, amongst others. More recently, he co-curated the exhibition “Geografias Construdas: Paulo Mendes da Rocha” with the Brazilian scholar Vanessa Grossman. The exhibition was hosted at the Casa da Arquitectura in Portugal and opened in the month of May.
