He was born in Hanmer, Ontario. Paul spent much of his boyhood learning and working on the family farm, where he assisted in milking cows and looking to crops. Following the passing of his father, he went back to Hanmer during the harvest season. In 1954, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and remained in the military for a total of 37 years. Because he joined the military at such a young age, he had the distinction of being the Canadian Armed Forces member who had the longest career before retiring. Jean-Paul put in a lot of effort so that he could provide for his small family, which included four children. As a means of supplementing his income while serving in the Armed Forces full-time, he tended bar on nights and weekends and worked at a canning plant during the week. During the Front de Libération du Québec (FLQ) crisis in October, he was serving in the military active duty in the vicinity of Montréal when the War Measures Act was passed. Obituary
