Roger Scruggs Obituary, Roger Scruggs has died joy anchie, August 1, 2023 Roger Lee Scruggs, Jr., age 52, of Appomattox, Virginia, passed away at his home on Tuesday, August 1, 2023. April Lynn Hudson Scruggs was his wife, and they had two children together. He was the son of Roger Scruggs, Sr. and Marjorie Taylor Scruggs and was born on January 13, 1971 in Farmville. His mother’s maiden name was Taylor. At Appomattox Outdoor Equipment, Lee worked as a Sales Associate for many years. Lee served as the president of Appomattox Youth Sports, was an umpire for Dixie Youth Baseball, and was the commissioner of Appomattox Youth Sports Baseball and Basketball. As a result of these roles, Lee had a good effect on the town of Appomattox. Lee was an avid supporter of a number of sports teams, including the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Yankees, and the Appomattox Raiders. He had been a fan of the University of Virginia Cavaliers his entire life, but when his niece Courtney began playing softball at UVA, he became the most devoted, enthusiastic, and proud Cavalier supporter possible. Lee was a member of a specialized group of umpires known as “The Blue Crew,” with whom he officiated a great deal of child baseball games. As “DJ Doc Lee,” Lee contributed to the atmosphere of a number of important occasions in Appomattox by playing music. He took great pride in being a father, a Peepaw, and an uncle. His children and his granddaughter were the most important people in his life. In addition to his wife and parents he is survived by four children, Corey Scruggs, Caylie Scruggs, Casey Scruggs, Conner Scruggs, all of Appomattox; his granddaughter Mila Smith, who he lovingly called “Peepaw’s Girl “; his sister, Jenny Scruggs Layne and husband, Bryan of Concord; and his niece, Courtney Layne; and his lifelong friend who he considered his brother, Andre Royal. On the Sunday, August 6th, 2023, at 2:00 PM, there will be a funeral service performed at Bible Baptist Church, and Pastor Jonathan Watson will preside over the ceremony. After the service, burial will take place in the cemetery belonging to Olive Branch United Methodist Church in Prospect, Virginia. The family will host a visitation for guests on Saturday, August 5 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Robinson Funeral Home, in addition to various times at the residence.
