The Bothy Band emerged as a very captivating folk ensemble from Ireland in the mid to late 1970s, exerting a significant influence on Irish traditional music within a relatively little period of existence. Tommy Peoples, a renowned fiddle player, sadly passed away at the age of 69 after a prolonged illness. He was notable among the band’s talented musicians for his very unique and recognizable playing style, which was deeply rooted in the traditional music of east Donegal. He succumbed to his ailments following a period of deteriorating physical condition. The musician’s exceptional proficiency in bowing, particularly in the execution of triplets, imbued his musical performances with a remarkable level of intensity and passion that was hardly equaled by his peers. Following Dónal Lunny’s resignation from the musical ensemble Planxty in 1975, the accomplished bouzouki player proceeded to establish his own musical group, subsequently recognized as The Bothy Band. Paddy Keenan, renowned for his mastery of the uilleann pipes, and Matt Molloy, acclaimed for his proficiency in playing the flute, constituted two prominent players within the band’s lineup. Paddy Glackin, the initial fiddle player of the band, resigned shortly after the band commenced their full-time performances, afterwards being replaced by Peoples. Molloy and Peoples had established a strong musical partnership before to their collaboration with Keenan, and the inclusion of the latter contributed a sense of dynamism and energy to the band’s music. Keenan assumed the role of the band’s third member. The band gained international recognition following the launch of their eponymous first album. This record was released under Lunny’s recently established Mulligan Records label, as well as through Polydor in Britain and Green Linnet in the United States. Obituary
